Occupy Wall Street has boldly called for a general strike of the 99 percent on May Day—May 1. “*No Work *No School *No Housework *No Shopping,” read the text approved by the OWS General Assembly. The action is scheduled to overlap with a day intended to call attention to the plight of immigrants. —ARK

OWS can't strike. You have to be a worker to strike.

Maybe they will all show up for work on May Day.
Or maybe they are calling on others to strike.

70 percent of the Occupy movement are employed. That's one of the many interesting statistics about this movement that interfere with the stereotype conservatives keep trying to circulate.

I'm supportive. My wife and I donated equipment to the encampment at Zucotti park.
It's probably better to have a movement built around people with jobs and homes than around kids with camping equipment (the stereotype). As I've said before (and I could be wrong), I think the name Occupy is counter-productive. It comes off as sounding like a fad. (Do you remember "streaking?") I really do hope that this is the beginning of a reform movement, but it is hard to tell. The thing about reform movements is that they don't usually do their work quickly. Nothing about to happen in Washington, including reelecting Obama, is aboutr to change anything anytime soon. We could both be dead before meaningful reform takes place.
It's not like we haven't seen this coming for decades:
Cold and misty morning, I heard a warning borne in the air
About an age of power where no one had an hour to spare,
Where the seeds have withered, silent children shivered, in the cold
Now their faces captured in the lenses of the jackals for gold.
I'll be there
I'll be there
I will be there.Suffering in silence, they've all been betrayed.
They hurt them and they beat them, in a terrible way,
Praying for survival at the end of the day.
There is no compassion for those who stay.
I'll be there
I'll be there
I will be there.

I share your hope, Gulliver. I also believe this is a solid step towards a real reform movement in this country. What I like about the name Occupy is that it's what I believe we as citizens have neglected to do regarding our government. In a democracy, the health of the government is in direct proportion to citizen involvement. But I do see your point as well. In such a consumer driven culture as we are today, brand name marketing is an elephant in the room that has to be considered.
The verse is lovely and familiar. Unfortunately, the little fever blister in my head won't make the connection to where it is from. Please fill me in, Gulliver.

Terrific. What a wonderful blast from the past. I haven't heard Karn Evil 9 for, well, probably a couple of decades at least. Thanks.

OWS is a much needed organization. In a time of Wall Street corruption, insider trading, thieves in the financial institutions and the unwillingness of the government to prosecute the criminals who else is going to put pressure on the system for reform? Not the Congressmen that participate in insider trading or those that are on the dole from the oil companies. We need to reestablish investigative journalism and end corporate editorial control. A democracy is tied to a free and independent media. Fortunately there are those, like OWS, that see thru the propaganda.

I think we are in need of a movement that is bigger than just OWS.

It has grown beyond just OWS. People around the world are getting involved.
"Governments of the world
We are watching you.
We are THE PEOPLE
We are the 99%
We do not forgive
We do not forget
United as ONE
Divided by ZERO
We are ANONYMOUS
We are LEGION
We are everywhere
And, we are coming
You have been warned"
The message seems pretty clear. The people are sick and tired of being screwed by big corporations and the dirty politicians on their payrolls, and are uniting to fight back.

While I agree with OWS... I beg beg beg them to not add school to it.
When you have students truant you can have problems. Public education depends money based on attendance.
No attendance, no money. For hard hit districts like mine, we can't afford it.

It's about time labor in this country noticed a similar plight with labor in other countries and worked with some common purpose.

Most folks "see thru the propaganda." That doesn't make the OWSers unique.
What made them unique was that they were a disorganized mob, cluttering up the cities they trashed.
